Then

在台灣我們學到的then都是當"然後"用
可是到了美國,then 最常用的是指時間,代表的是"那時,或是當時"

pocket 每個星期都會跟語言交換出來見面,所以每個星期都會寫信給對方說,

A: Do you want to meet up tomorrow?
B: Yeah, what time works for you?
A: How about tomorrow 10am?
B: Sounds great! I will see you then.

meet up: 你可以說meet 也可以說meet up. 但是好像meet up比較口語喔!
what time works for you? 你什麼時間可以,work這個字. 可以翻成行得通.
Sounds great! 聽起來很不賴! (你也可回答, Yeah, it works for me. 指的是這個時間對我來說行的通,就是我可以的意思)
I will see you then. 到時候見,then 指的就是你剛剛提議的 tomorrow 10am.

如果你們已經約定好時間,現在在說約定的地點,
你可以說
How about meet in the engineering library.
OK, I will see you "there". 就是代表"在那裡見!"


在文章裡也常常看到, back to then
In 20th century, .....back to then, people
通常之前會有一個時間,而且是過去的時間,所以back to then, 代表的意思是指"那時候" 只是這個時間是過去的時間.

不客氣

在台灣如果有人跟我們說, Thank you.
我們一定會說 You're welcome.

但是到了美國之後,才知道說不客氣有很多說法.

第一次聽到是快要來美國時 ,在MSN跟學長上問事情,
說完我就說
thank you very much!
然後他回答
"No Problem"

阿~沒什麼問題阿?我心裡想,
但是這應該就是不客氣的意思ㄅ!?
要不然還有什麼意思

後來來美國之後,發現很多人都這麼說,
尤其是每次去Super那裡,請他修東西的時候
最後我都會說謝謝,她們都會回我No problem.

@: Super 是 superintendent的簡稱,就是指你們公寓的管理員.

1.1. 有時候你要說沒關係,你也會說Not a problem.
例如:客戶跟老闆相約,結果遲到了,對方就一直說,
我很抱歉我遲到了,
老闆就會說,not a problem.

2. 還有時候她們會說'Anytime.'
例如:Big 在SATC裡面載了carrie一程,
當carrie下車,並跟他致謝的時候,
他就說'Anytime'
有點是,任何時候我都會在這裡為你服務的感覺.
來我們公司送信的郵差小姐,也常常這樣說

3. 如果你覺得你幫的忙沒什麼,
你也可以說Sure. 代表沒什麼,或是這是應該的


4. "Yep."
代表收到的意思

5. 但是如果要正式的話,或者是你覺得你真的幫了別人一個忙,
那還是說You're welcome.

Broadway show裡面的Avenue Q.其中一首主題歌就是 There is a fine fine line.

lesson 3-工作英文

1. 上班
接電話的時候,常常要說,那個同事現在不在,所以我就會說, "he is not in the office right now, may I take a message."
或是她們會問, "will he be in tomorrow?" 他們明天會在辦公室裡面("in")ㄇ?(就是明天他們會來上班ㄇ?)

所以來上班就是"in",下班就是off!

1.1 Come on "in".
快一點進來.

2. 下班
老闆每天下班都會說, I am off. 有時候他也會說 I am going home.
一開始我都會說, I am leaving. (我要走了!) 後來我發現這好像不是一個很好的講法,因為感覺上像是生氣了! ex: SATC 有一次凱利跟他的俄國男友吵架,他就說 "I am leaving."就是我要走了!
所以後來我都說I am going home.

I get off at 4am.
我凌晨四點下班


2.1.1 I am off to bed.
我要去睡覺了

2.1.2 醒著是 "up"
Oh, mom, you're up!
歐~媽媽~您醒啦!

2.2. Turn off the light.
把電燈關掉

所以off就是有一點,停止運作的感覺.
